Since their formation as the Grand Divisions of Marines in 1755, drummers and buglers have been an integral part of the Royal Marines. The musician's original role was to communicate orders from commanders to their troops in peace, and on the battlefield, by means of drum commands and signals. In today's Royal Marines, during combat, the drummers and bandsmen adopt the role of front line medics and stretcher bearers.
