Product Description

The Royal Horse Artillery was created in 1793 to provide the cavalry with fast moving fire support. All gunners were mounted, either on horse or on the limbers. Wellington, a master at manoevre greatly favoured horse artillery, becoming a master at their deployment in attack and defence. On many occasions the Royal Horse Artillery provided battle winning supporting fire, devastaing enemy cavaly and infantry when fired upon from a flank. The statuette depicts a spongeman/gunner with his sponge for 'damping down' the barrel of the gun and cannister charge, which were lethal when fired at short range. This statuette makes a lovely retirement presentation or farewell gift to serving and ex members of the Royal Horse Artillery.
